Adam Casmiri Wins Tomerong Rally 07

New member Adam Casmiri and Adriana Pallister have taken out the inaugural Tomerong Rally by 9 seconds over Matt Amos and Zoey Gillis. It was a battle of the Evo I’s with Matt taking the lead in the first stage pipping Adam by just 1 second. With rain on the second stage Adam took the lead in the slippery conditions. Stage 3 saw Matt reduce Adams lead to only 7 seconds however Adam answered the challenge on the final stage and extended his lead by a further 2 seconds.

Fastest 2wd was Denis ‘Butch’ Stanford in the immaculately prepared Stanza. Butch lead the 2wd assault from start to finish bringing the Datsun home in 3rd place outright with the help of last minute nav Matt Meade, who’s regular driver Dave Roberts couldn’t make the event due to work commitments.
Competitor of the day has to go to Zoey Gillis who not only navigated in the 2
nd place car but also navigated for her Dad, Darren, in the RS Subaru and had her first ever drive in a rally keeping the Subaru on the road despite the sometimes slippery conditions.

Matt James and Carl Stewart swapped sides for this event with Carl calling the notes while Matt punted the Escort around the course. Matt also navigated for our other new member Mick Fawcett in the Evo III, before he withdrew before the start of the second stage.

Gavin Lockeridge made a long anticipated return to rally with wife Tracey navigating for him in the little lancer GSR, however they did suffer a couple of problems early on with water in number 4 sparkplug hole causing a misfire and the towing hook catching on a hump and doing some damage to the front left corner.

Damien Soward and Kristy Officer discovered the real joy of driving a Datsun 1200 with the car coming into its own in the tight twisty section at the bottom of the forest. Darren Gillis proved that a normally aspirated car always sounds better than turbo car pushing the RS through the forest in all it noisy induction induced glory.

The venue turned out to be a great place to run the event, the roads although very slippery on the second stage due to the down pour between stages 1&2, benefited greatly from the moisture becoming very grippy for Stages 3&4. The layout of the forest means that the event can be run with only one road closure whilst still maintaining and exceptionally high level of stage security. The proximity to local residential areas gave the opportunity for many friends and loved ones to come out and give their support to competitors.

Finally a huge thanks must go out to all the officials and volunteers who helped out both on the day and in the lead up to the event.

  • Local Residents bordering onto Tomerong State Forest
Paul from First Response Medical, for coming out with his FIV

  • Wayne Amos and Darren Gillis for supplying HQ, radio communications and pulled down the course at the end of the day
  • Matt Amos equipment coordinator and supply of transportation of key officials.
  • Big Al, Officials Coordinator.
  • Big Al, Tony and Greg who manned the Start control of stages 1&2 and the flying Finish of 3&4
  • Ian and Carrie Forsyth and Alan Rewell, Flying finish Stages 1&2 and Start of 3&4
  • Greg Anderson, road closure
  • John Ewing Spectator Control
  • Kerry Amos, Sharon Gillis and Matt Hope for assisting at HQ
  • Andrew Kohler, Carl Stewart and John Ewing course set up
  • John Lockeridge Checker, 000 and 00
  • Col Anderson and Al Voysey Stewards
  • Wayne Amos Chief Scrutineer and navigator of car 0
  • Matt Hope, Lizzy and Spot for their efforts as sweep car
  • Lizzy Ferme, for pre and post event paperwork, dealing with Forests NSW and running of proceedings on the day
  • John Ewing and Shayne Iversen for setting the road book
  • Chris Coates, assistance with traffic management plan
  • Tony and Julie Wilson, printing and binding of road books, time cards and road closure signs
  • Carl Stewart, Daniel O’Dempsey, Big Al, John Ewing, Andrew Kohler, Matt and Wayne Amos, Damien Soward and Kristy officer for all their help on the working bee.
  • Lizzy, Dave Roberts and Boris Carloff, who’s support and input I can always rely on to help develop these harebrained ideas that I have into something worth while.

Success For SKDAC At Alpine Rally 07

The weekend of the 24th and 25th of November saw the 2007 Alpine Rally take place once again in the beautiful state of Victoria. The Alpine Rally is an event that is run every 2 years and is only for the 2 wheel drive car. No modern 4 wheel drive cars are allowed to enter has it is an historic event and the organisers like to keep its authenticity. It is an extremely large rally and not for the faint hearted as it consists of 450kms of competitive driving over the 2 days. If you are lucky enough to finish the Alpine Rally then it is a great accomplishment.
SKDAC had 3 teams entered in the event out of 113 teams overall. These being: Claude Murray and Lizzy Ferme in a Datsun 1600, Nathan Senior and Dave Trees in a Volvo 165 and Carl Stewart and Matty James  also in a Datsun 1600.
The first day started off well for SKDAC with Claude and Lizzy leading the pack at the end of division one. However as the day went on they had a couple of problems including running off the road and getting a flat tyre which unfortunately lost them the lead for the first day.
Carl and Matty had a steady run for most of the day and were running 7th after the end of division one and after having gearbox trouble. With a quick gearbox fix and a lot of help from support crew they managed to get the ball rolling again.
Nathan and Dave seemed to be having a smooth run and running somewhere around the midway mark.

Carl Stewart, Matt James 2007 Alpine Rally
By the end of the day which was actually already into Sunday, Carl and Matty were sitting in 4th position, Claude and Lizzy were 9th and Nathan and Dave had problems with the rear of the car and unfortunately didn't get to finish the first day. Day two would be the test to sort the men from the boys as most people didn't finish day 1 until the early hours of the Sunday morning and then had an early rise to come.
Day 2 saw a bit of light rain which was great for the roads as it meant less dust and more visibility for the drivers. All of our 3 teams were back out there and running. Nathan and Dave had managed to fix their problem and entered back into the event for day 2.
Stage 1 saw a win for Carl and Matty with the fastest time on that stage. Great way to start the day. The next stage was smooth sailing for them as well until they reached stage 3 were they hit a mysterious object on the side of the road, damaging the rear trailing arm on the right side of the car. They had to put up with this problem for the remainder of the rally as they couldn't fix it in the time they had at service. They plugged on and managed to finish without any other problems.
Claude and Lizzy were lucky to have a problem free run, however with the time they had lost on the previous day it still wasn't enough to bring them back up to the top.
Unfortunately for Nathan and Dave they had a repeat of day 1 and were unable to finish the rally.
Claude Murray, Lizzy Ferme 2007 Alpine rally

Final results were:
Carl Stewart and Matty James 4th Outright
Claude Murray and Lizzy Ferme 5th Outright
Nathan Senior and Dave Trees DNF
Well done to all 3 teams and special congratulations to Carl and Claude who should be honoured to finish in the top 10 out of such a large field of talented 2wd drivers.
A huge thankyou to all of the officials, volunteers and support crews who without, this extremely large event wouldn't have been possible.
Anybody who is interested in this extraordinary rally will unfortunately have to wait until 2009 as it is a bi-annual
event. However if you would like to view the full results or pictures from the weekend go to www.alpinerally.org.au
This was the last event for SKDAC for the year and they will be holding their presentation night on the 25th on January 2008

Some great footage is now on Youtube, here is some of it,

Narooma 2008

On the weekend on the 01Mar08 saw the running of the Narooma Booma Rally, held in and around the beautiful town of Narooma and Bodalla. SKDAC was involved in the rally with 5 teams and various other officials out in the forest. From the reports so far the roads were in great condition, until some of  the re-run stages later in the night were found to be rather rocky.

Dennis Stanford and Andrew Kohler on the way to 8th O/R

The first SKDAC member home was Matt James naving for the fast charging Glen Farrant in the Excel in 6th place. Next was an excellent result for Dennis Stanford and Andrew Kohler in the Stanza in 8th. Following a little further back after a fantastic start to the event then hampered by electrical problems was Dave Roderts and Matt Mead in the red Excel in 22nd place. Only 4 cars further back was the hard charging Volvo man Nathan Senior (Spac) and Damien Murray in the Volvo 164. To finish it off with a very happy result even after a water crossing misshap, were the team Kermit consisting of Damien Soward and Kristy Offner in the 1200 coupe coming 36th O/R.

As previously stated the club also were involved with various officials jobs, including running stage 3 (Commerong rd) and and some later control points later in the evening.

"Who would have thought it would be so hard to finish a Canberra rally"

DATSUN 1200 COUPE (Kermit)

We had a fantastic time and thanks to all the happy smiling officials out there. I wish I had a dollar for every controllie that tells me that they used to have a 1200 and it was the most fun they ever had rallying. And fun it was.
Recce was uneventful for us (we did ours on Friday – thanks Paul, Russel and team) except for the news of Tamsey giving the WRCoroner the new crinkle finish. The thing we noticed most during recce was how many places and things there are to hit, slip into or generally get wrong. But the west side looked like a lot of fun (our first time over there).
We got to stage 1 and found out that about 5 cars had not made it to the end of stage 2, so we took it easy and enjoyed the view.

Damien and Kristie get the wheels in the air during Rally Of Canberra.

Things were cruising along (watching more cars on the side of the road) until we got to the Gorge. We had put on lights at service and car was getting hotter (in hindsight from lack of air flow). 3 – 2 -1 and 400m up the road the car died. Kristy bolted with the triangles (lucky she was a school cross country champ). The car started, she bolted back. The car died, she bolted back with the triangle. The car started, she bolted back. The car died…….. This kept going on until three cars had passed and the sweep turned up. Finally it started and we were off without intercoms plugged in. Kristy bellowed the calls in between catching her breathe. It was kind of funny looking back. Turned out to be vaporising fuel.

It gets worse.

Day 2 – Stage 3 – we are getting along fine crashing though the rough when bang and something goes wrong with the steering. We think it’s a flat so pull over. No flat, nothing hanging off, nothing seems to be loose. But we drive out at snails pace in case something falls off. We pull over and wait for Tamesy to pass so we don’t cause him dust. Turns out that we smashed the rim on the inside (tyre still up thanks to tubes) and it is rubbing on the strut tube. Thanks to David Ferris and Mal Smith (sweep car) for all the help.

But wait there’s more…

Day 2 – The Gorge (it’s cursed for us). Book into control and Kristy calls me up. I notice a nasty rattle in the front right strut. As we are in control a couple of “unofficals” give the car a shake and a push and diagnose a loose top strut bolt (thanks guys).
3 – 2 -1 , we go 20m out of control and pull over. Borrow some plyers (as our shifter was too small – will learn form this one). Got it tightened enough and then took it easy until we knew it was going to hold. Surprisingly it did. After that we tightened it properly (thanks Andy C) at next control.
All in all, had a great time. We are still slow, but managed to improve our times on every pass (except where we had major probs). Our times are now snapping at the heels of Byron, which is a significant improvement for us. Of course, he is getting faster and we will never actually catch him

Thanks again to all the controllies and road closure folk who stood out in the forest for two days. Thanks also to the crowd at the speccy point and commentators who gave us a big build up and support (with some gentle persuasion from my wife).

Mosty thanks to my service crew, who is my family, who continually support us at every event. It makes it all the more worthwhile and fun.
And of course my “ever calm” navigator Kristy, who only gasped once  when we almost hit a concrete tank at the speccy point going into the tunnel.
Just a quick cheers to the guys at the back of the field. Everyone is there for a good time, and no one takes themselves too seriously and are always very quick to lend a hand. That is what makes rallying so much fun.

Cheers
Damien Soward
ps. forgot to mention the rock that smashed a hole through the floor the size of my fist. Fair to say we took the water splash super slow on the next stage.

2ND BY 2 SECONDS AT BONNIE DOON RALLY

The "serenity" at Bonnie Doon Victoria was certainly spoilt on Saturday 29 Mar 08 as once again the North Eastern Car Club ran its annual rally through the town that was made famous by the Australian movie 'The Castle'.
A total of 70 cars were entered with most teams coming from the Victoria region. The only team from NSW was from SKDAC and consisted of Carl Stewart from Nowra and Dean Price from Wagga in a Datsun 1600. Carl had previously run the rally last year and managed to finish just off the podium coming in 4th outright, so his challenge this year was to gain a podium finish.
The event started at the Bonnie Doon Hotel which was the central location for the rally. There were a total of 10 stages that were run on the roads in and around the small country town. Conditions were near perfect which made it an easy run for most competitors.
The event had two main spectator points that were used twice throughout the day and it was great to see a fairly large crowd turn up to support the teams.
Carl and Dean seemed to have a near flawless run with only a few minor errors which didn't seem to effect their end result. This was actually the first time the two members had competed together, and Dean had not navigated for 4 years as he normally competes as a driver.

Carl and Dean coming into a rather chopped up spectator point
The rally came to a conclusion around 4pm and everyone headed into the hotel for a well earned rest and a few drinks. Results weren't finalised for another hour, so the two SKDAC boys waited anxiously to find out if this year they had made the podium. To their delight they had not only made the podium but had moved up 2 places from last year to 2nd place and were only behind the winners, who were in an Mitsubishi Evo 5, by a 2 second gap. A tremendous result for a little Datsun 1600, 2 wheel drive to come in so close to a powerful 4 wheel drive. Carl and Dean were also ecstatic to find out on stage 9 they had equalled the winners with their time, which should have been an easy win for the Evo 5, for that particular stage, and won the last stage by 4 seconds.
Both members were extremely delighted and proud of their achievements, especially Carl as this is his best result yet in his rallying career and the Bonnie Doon Rally also holds a special spot in his heart as he used to live in the town as a child.
The podium results were:
1st O/R and 1st in class E (over 2000cc 4wd) - Derek Reynolds and David Kelly VIC
2nd O/R and 1st in class C (1600 to 2litre 2wd) - Carl Stewart and Dean Price NSW
3rd O/R and 1st in class D (over 2litre 2wd) - Darren Snooks and Matt De Vaus VIC

Fifth place for Price in ACT Rally Series

Dean Price and Matthew James of Price Rallysport have clawed their way to fifth outright in the recent round of the PCD Engineering ACT Rally Series. Price and James, competeing in their 1600cc Proton Satria, never looked back as they tackled the fast and demanding gravel roads of Canberra.

“We have had a really great day today with no problems at all. It’s a fine way to start our championship for 2008,” Price said.

They also finished first ACT Clubman and first in class P2.

The third round was conducted as part of the 2008 Rally of Canberra. For the 40 plus crews that entered, points were only rewarded for Saturday’s proceedings. Price Rallysport are concentrating on the PCD Engineering ACT Rally Series this year, and have the Clubman section in their sights.

“We had to get a good result here at the Rally of Canberra. It was crucial that we finished this event with a handful of points,” explained co-driver Matthew James.

Dean Price, Matt James Rally of Canberra 08, fifth ACT crew home

Fellow team-mate and sibling, Ryan Price, with co-driver Russell Taylor, also drove their 1600cc Proton Satria to 18th outright and a commendable first in the Novice class.

The team now have a two and half month wait for the fourth round of the series, which will again be held in the forests of Canberra.

Price Rallysport would like to thank the following sponsors for their ongoing support: Australasian Glass Machinery, Caltex on Fernleigh, Burson Autoparts, Redline Autotech/ Repco Service Centre Wagga Wagga, Novus Windscreens, The Shanty Ice-Creamery, Wagga Natural Insulation and Ben Ruggles Motorsport.

From all of the SKDAC crew, congratulations guys and all the best for the future as a family.

Targa Tasmania 2008 Matt & Zoey

After a busy 6 month break over summer our season kicked off last Saturday with Zoey’s family and mine making the trek down to Tasmania to compete in the Rookie section of Targa Tasmania. Not having done a tarmac rally before or running on pace notes we weren’t sure what to expect but were excited about what was to come in the following week.

We arrived in Launceston late Sunday night and got some rest, the next day we were off to event head quarters for scrutineering and documentation. We got to HQ reasonably early to be greeted by the sight of a Pagani Zonda ($1.3 million), a brand new Porsche GT2 ($500,000) and 2 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggra’s ($750,000 each). It finally hit home that this tarmac caper is going to be far different then the gravel that we’re used to. We breezed through Monday with no problems and were looking forward driving the newly resprayed Evo in anger for the first time this year.

The prologue stage was a 5km loop around George Town, which would be used to seed the cars in their race order for the following days of competition. The streets of George Town were very tight with short to medium length straights in between corners. This put a lot of pressure on the cars brakes and resulted in them over heating towards the end of the stage causing us to loose almost all retardation that they once offered. We backed off and got to the end of the stage with only a couple of moments that I’m sure had some of the residents thinking they were about to get a rally car through their front fence.

The next day we set off to the first day of real competition. We started off nice and easy learning how to drive on pace notes and learning just what the car would do on tarmac. However in saying that we managed to top the speedo out on more then one occasion which after a quick calculation was about 210-220km/h. Pace notes really do enable you to go a lot quicker! We continued to get quicker with every stage and got threw the day unscathed.

Thursday morning came around and both Zoey and I were really looking forward to the day’s stages after hearing nothing but good reports about them. SS1 was “The Sideling” which is the most famous of the tarmac roads in the rally. It’s just over 10km’s of tight, twisty back roads that run through the hills. The roads really suited the 4WD turbo and we were starting to peg back time on the cars in front of us. That was until 3 corners from the end when some locals had poured oil on the road and although Zoey warned me about it, I still managed to go a bit quick through the corner and spin the car a full 360 at about 150km/h. Through shear luck we missed a fence by less the half a meter, not even coming to a stop before we were pointing in the right direction and off again. No real harm done and we only lost about 10 seconds.

On the transport to stage 2 we noticed oil smoke coming from the car on deceleration, we promptly turned around and went in search of mobile reception to get in contact with our service crew, luck should have it that we actually came across them only 5 minutes down the road. After a quick inspection by Dad and Darren we deduced the problem to be a failure with the turbo and it was leaking oil into the exhaust. We pressed on hoping that we could make it threw the last 3 stages before lunch break.

Stage 2 we got through without any real dramas and only emitted a slight amount of smoke on every gear change.

Stage 3 was a different story. The smoke was getting worse, to the point where the entire road would disappear into a cloud of white every time the throttle was closed. We were only to make it 3km into this stage when oil shot out the bonnet vent and all over the windscreen. Our race was over there and then, the car was parked on the side of the road and Zoey and I spent the next few hours spectating. The tow truck came promptly after sweep came through and the evo was on the trailer heading for St Helens in no time. Getting ourselves there however proved to be the problem. We were supposed to be picked up by the competitor transport vehicle and taken to the lunch break, which was where the car was going. We waited for 10 minutes until Herman the bus driver came to pick us up, problem was instead of stopping for us he did a 3-point turn and drove off in the opposite direction. We continued to wait on the side of the road for another 45 minutes before some officials stopped to ask us what we were doing on the side of the road. After we explained our story they squeezed us into the already full Outlander and drove us the 50km into St Helens to meet our car and get phone reception to call our parents and let them know what had happened and that we’d need the car trailer to get back to Launceston. Since service was at the lunch break and the trailer was back at the caravan park (2 hours away) we now had 4 hours to kill. We finally got back to Launceston with the car at 9p.m. after D.N.F.ing at 11:30 that morning.

Although the race didn’t go as we’d planned both Zoey and I had a ball and time and money providing we’ll be back next year to give it another crack.

A Huge thanks goes to both my family and Zoey’s for all the effort they put in to allowing us to race around in the car for a week. Also thanks to Zoey for another awesome job on the other side of the car, having never used pace notes before she did a faultless job.

Cheers Matt

Thornliegh Supersprint at Wakefield Park

A bit of an overview of the supersprint at Wakefield Park on 1st June.
There were 6 entrants from SKDAC, everyone figured in the results,
--Dan Vrubel in a WRX STI 22 b replica finished 3rd outright behind a Formula Holden open wheeler and a heavily modified Mitsibishi Scorpion running slicks.

--Darren Gillis was 2nd in class in some sort of Commodore monster ( 6 litres of monster ) but it sounded fantastic.
--Andrew Kohler was 2nd in his class.
--Lizzy was 1st in her class and Peter was 2nd in his class ( same car same class ) well done Lizzy
.
--I just scraped home with a 1st in class just in front of a Commodre ute.
The most interesting car was probably a Auto Union( circa 1930's ) open wheeler with a V 12 Jag motor, don't know how he drove it but it sounded sweet.
A cold overcast day but a lot of fun.
